Book 9 for 2016: The Three-Body Problem
This year had almost entirely been physical books, and after reading yesterday’s short bit of Martian fiction on my awesome kindle, I decided to give it some more love with this week’s read: The Three Body Problem.
In accordance with my yearly goal to ‘see what all the fuss is about’ with a bunch of authors/movies/foods, I chose this book by the Chinese author Liu Cixin. I specifically mention that he is Chinese, because this book seems to be at the forefront of a Chinese Science Fiction resurgence at the moment, and the people over at io9 have been raving about it since its translation hit shelves (be they digital or physical) back in 2014. Not to mention that undeniably cool President Obama has been reading it on holidays this year, and Mark Zuckerberg had it as a part of his ‘Year in Books’ last year. Definitely time to see what all the fuss is about.

Book 8 for 2016: First Grave on Mars
I am a sucker for a good mars book. Ever since reading Kim Stanley Robinsons #MarsTrilogy back in ’97 the red planet has fascinated me. Combine this with a tendency for late night drunken Kindle purchases and you are left with this week’s new read: First Grave on Mars.
As you can tell from the photo, this book doesn’t have much to it. In fact I already finished it before I had a chance to write this post, so need to start thinking of my next read! It was a good little read, and intriguing enough mystery that means I will definitely buy the next in the Martian Murders series, though I do prefer my mars stories to be a bit more rigorous in their handling of the science portion of the story. And while I like the premise of the Martian explorers being along the vein of the current Mars One swindle, the way it was handled didn’t seem realistic enough (no one on earth, or mars, seems to be taking any of this stuff seriously). But that being said, I got what I paid for, and enjoyed myself along the way.

Happy 30th birthday to my most amazing wife Lizzie!
We have been together for almost twelve years now, and I am thankful every day. Over a third of her life she has been putting up with me so far, and trust me that is no easy feat!
Her strength and determination are an inspiration to me; she gives my life so much meaning. Her belief in me and having her by my side, makes me feel so lucky, and helps motivate me to be a better person.
She is simply the best wife, the most amazing mum, an awesome human being, and a beautiful person.
So Happy Birthday beautiful, I look forward to celebrating many more with you, and continuing forward in this life we are forging together.
